Seminar:The Role of Manager,Supervisor & HR Professionals in Health and Safety

BACKGROUND
According to the WHO, “all workers have the right to healthy and safe work and to a work environment that enables them to live a socially and economically productive life” (WHO, 1994).The Company is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for the staff, and workers. By playing a special role in making sure this commitment is carried out, manager / supervisor and human resources are the front-line expert who best knows the workplace, the employees, and the demands they face. Therefore, manager / supervisor and human resources play a critical role in identifying possible health and safety problems in the workplace. Manager / supervisor and Human Resources are a key link to company resources which have been set up to handle workplace health and safety issues. Manager / supervisor and Human Resources are a role model and motivator for employees in the department. The importance being in place on workplace health and safety issues is conveyed to the workers by the actions as well as the words.

OBJECTIVES
•   Understand how to foster a safe and healthy work environment by providing training and proper equipment and by modeling and rewarding safe and healthy work practices
•   Prevent injuries and illnesses to reduce the human and financial costs associated with Workers’ Compensation, disability, and health care
•   Recruit and retain the best employees by being a supervisor who cares about the well-being of Company and workers.

CONTENTS
1. MANAGEMENT COMMITMENT.

Particular attention is drawn to the importance of management providing a visible expression of commitment. Failure to do so will undermine the credibility of HSE policy and objectives.
2. SAFE WORK PROCEDURES
Safe work procedures ensure all workers are aware of the risks in their work tasks, and outline how to avoid injury or illness while doing these tasks.
3. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION
Workers need to know how to do their jobs safely and they need to be aware of issues that affect their health and safety. Training is one of the best ways to ensure that the workers are safe while at work.
4. THE ROLE OF MANAGER, SUPERVISOR AND HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSIONALS
Learning about occupational health issues relevant to the workplace. In the other hands, doing assessment to the potential health risks at the workplace regularly and act promptly to correct hazardous situations in accordance with the department’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program. And also, discussing the workplace health and safety issues at staff meetings or HSE Committee meeting. Providing health and safety training for all department. Ensure that employees participate in medical screening and immunization programs applicable to their jobs. Assure employees get appropriate medical treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses.
5. EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP).
Employee assistance program is a confidential, short term, counselling service for employees with personal problems that affect their work performance.

He was graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University in 1979 and Master of Science in Occupational Medicine, University of Indonesia in 2004. He started his career as Occupational Health practicioner at PT. Ekspan Kalimantan, he later became Chief Medical Officer and then Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene Coordinator at PT. Medco Energy. His Expertise and experienced give him a very broad perspectives in handling any issues related to Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene.
